Curious George Takes Three Gals "Down Under"

Though I'm not what you would call "a girly girl" (I was never into princesses or pink), as a Mom of two uber boys, I have come to appreciate the occasional break from Star Wars, arm pit farts and wrestling. Thankfully, several of my Mom pals have super cool little gals they're willing to share!

This morning, after dumping the Baron of Boredom and Master Mayhem at school, this George fan and two of her fav girlies, Katie & Liza, got to spend the morning down under with the good little monkey at the Season 7 premiere of Curious George.

George and the Man with the Yellow Hat join Bindi Irwin for an Australian adventure, learning about the unique creatures that live down under -- emus, dingos, dugongs (the manatee's Australian cousin), and kangaroos. There's also an original song, sung by Bindi, in the episode!

Curious George: Monkey Down Under

Before the screening there were snacks & coloring . . .

and after the show we were joined by a very special guest!

Thanks for the super fun field trip this morning, George!

Season 7 of Curious George premieres December 3rd on PBS.

Weeksworld Weekly Eats #5

It's Wednesday, but what the heck, it's never to late to post the Weekly Eats!

Orecchiette Carbonara with Asparagus
A Weeksworld favorite - easy, quick & tasty.
This time I added some diced the chicken from the leftover Chicken Cordon Bleu failure of a few nights prior.

If you haven't checked out Alexandra's site, do it . . . now! I'll wait for you to come back.
She's got so many great recipes and drool-inducing food photography!

Tuesday's Beef Chili was from my basement freezer stash.
Soups, stews, chilies, lasagnas and casseroles are all prime candidates for the freezer! I always double these so I have another supper to add to my stockpile! Another trip thru the drive thru avoided!

Wednesday's play date morphed into supper with good friends and their visiting family. What chaos, what fun!
Just one problem . . . what were we thinking opening so many bottles of vino the night before Thanksgiving?!

Thursday was savored with family at The Handsome Husband's Aunt's. The boys were deep into turkey comas before the Mom-mobile pulled out of the driveway to head home.

Friday I got to enjoy my favorite part of Thanksgiving - Turkey Sandwiches with Durkee's Famous Sandwich & Salad Sauce. It's not mayo, it's not mustard, it's Durkee's, it's beyond description, especially pared with cold turkey! Trust me, try some!

Saturday was our wonderful hamlet's annual "Blue Tree Lighting" on the town common . . . seemed like a perfect opportunity to stroll over to one of our favorite pizza places for supper.

Sunday -- after a grueling swim practice the Baron of Boredom sweetly requested pasta with meatballs, and I couldn't refuse him. As much as I was looking forward to turkey and herb biscuits, I figured my guys had had enough turkey for awhile. Trader Joe's to the rescue - my pantry & freezer were stocked with all the necessary components.

Here's what on the menu board this week...

Tomorrow, I promise, you'll get that Moroccan Chicken Stew recipe!

Weeksworld Weekly Eats #4

Last year on Thanksgiving morning I was working up a sweat in the kitchen, setting the table, and counting the minutes until I could switch from coffee to vino.

This year, we're making a relatively short, 45-minute trek to the Handsome Husband's Aunt's house and I'm only responsible for two dishes for the Thanksgiving feast -- dressing and green bean casserole.

Of course, no box stuffing/dressing or soup can casserole will do, so I turned to my faithful Cook's Illustrated for Cornbread and Sausage Stuffing (I added chopped dried cranberries and chopped pecans) and Cook's Country for Make-Ahead Green Bean Casserole (which I made this morning).

In the kitchen by 7am, done with both by 9am! Still time to finish this post and primp before departure time! Phew!

As usual,  last week's menu plan wasn't strictly adhered to...

ADD Fog Lifts, Time to Take Control

After weeks of struggling and fumbling about in an ADD fog -- a fog so thick simple distractability would have been welcome -- the bright light of hyper-focus finally returned last week.

Hyper-focus is a mutable character. Its erratic & sneaky -- it give no warning of its impending arrival, so you just keep waiting, and waiting, and waiting, then it slips in quietly and takes over. Sometimes it even takes me a day or two to recognize and acknowledge its presence. (Kinda like those bitchy, cranky days, those days your family wishes they could lock you in the basement, but then who would feed them, and it's not til your period arrives that you realize the beastly behavior was courtesy of PMS.)

This time it took two into-the-wee-hours writing sessions for me to realize I was back in the game. It felt so good to be writing again, working. There were lists & chores to be dealt with, but hyper-focus is at the expense of all else, and I happily relinquish control and ride its wave, because I know the shore it will deliver me onto will be relatively tranquil, full of possibility and productivity.

The torrent of ideas flowed rapidly onto lists, scraps of paper, and into my voicemail so I wouldn't forget. Stuff was gonna get done!
Now that my feet are planted firmly on the beach, I've digested the mess of ideas and, much like Santa this time of year, I'm making my lists and checking 'em twice.

Sure there are the day-to-day lists of errands, chores, emails, drop offs & pick ups and playdates, but I'm talking the bigger, generally overwhelming items, that tend to languish in the corners of a life.

Add these big ticket items to the mundane day-to-days and the noise quickly becomes deafening.  Soon this Mom on ADD gets so damn distracted she's swimming in circles, finally falling on shore (couch or bed, depending which is closest) in an exhausted & defeated heap and what I call "ADD paralysis" sets in, and then comes the fog again.

So to keep me on track, riding the waves, instead of treading water, here's my Late Night-inspired master list . . .

10. Purge the Attic Closet
You know those clothes that migrated north many seasons ago, clothes that haven't been worn in years. Time to say bye-bye!

9.  Sew Sofa Accent Pillows
Remember when things got Sew Scary? Well that accent pillow project remains untouched in my basement!

8.  Sell, Sell, Sell
There's an entire shelf in my basement of eBay-worthy junk I've been meaning to post. Heck, who couldn't use a few extra $$, and I'm an ardently believer in one gal's junk/trash . . .

7.  Purge Recipe Binders
Three 3' binders house my collection of recipes, but thanks to Cook's Illustrated, America's Test Kitchen, Cook's Country, Martha, Everyday Food and Pinterest the blizzard of new recipes pages are making my once organized system unmanageable.

6.  Clean Out Knitting Bin
I haven't touched my knitting needles in MONTHS. "Why" you ask? Because I haven't been able to face the overflowing bin of unfinished Christmas projects, gifts I had planned for LAST Christmas. It's time to get stitching again! I can't think of a better way to wile away the hours & hours I'll be spending sitting poolside at swim meets this winter.

5.  Housewife Migration
OK, here's the biggie confession, I've been saying it's gonna get done SOON for almost a year -- it's time to finally make the switch to self-hosted WordPress!

I'm a do-it-yourselfer -- why pay someone big bucks to do what I know I can get done, and I like knowing how it all works, knowing how to tweek things when inspiration strikes. I've done my research and homework, the mechanics are relatively simple. I've made my list of widgets & plug-ins. So what's the hold up? I have to pick a theme! That's it, just one small element of a much larger endeavor that is holding up the whole show! There are just so many to consider! I found the perfect template a month ago, just a few simple changes, only to realize it was for Blogger and the designer didn't have time to redo it for WordPress. So now I'm back to the drawing board!

4.  Decrease the Cyber Noise
Amy Renea at A Nest for All Seasons and Fadra at Social Dialect got me thinking about all the people and pages filling my feeds, how sometimes their innocent posts and tweets were making me feel less than pleased with my scattered self. Important emails get lost in the avalanche of emails I'll never read. Sites I enjoy reading go neglected for weeks because they are buried in the lengthy lists of bookmarks. So it's time to clean up the Twitter feed, whittle down the Facebook likes and unsubscribe, unsubscribe, unsubscribe.

3.  Finish Office Reorganization
Yep, commenced way back in the beginning of October and I never got back to it! I've successfully avoided the mess by working at the dining table these past week, but we all know central locations aren't good spot for minimizing distractions.
2.  Pre-Christmas Toy Purge
Room must be made before the Christmas morning tsunami!

1.  New Holiday Ensemble
We've got a few holiday gathering on our calendar this season, and Mama wants/needs/deserves/demands a festive new frock! Maybe something sparkly? Or a splash of vivid color?

Phew, that's some list! But it's organized & prioritized.

Now to do a little time management analysis -- I found some interesting new perspectives and approaches in Judith Kolberg's article "Tackling To-Do Lists with ADHD" that I'm going to try out -- and then start chipping away at what feels like the Mount Everest of lists.

Weeksworld Weekly Eats #3

No storm to knock Weeksworld off track this week, just the usual frenetic pace.

Old-Fashioned Beef Noodle Soup
from America's Test Kitchen's Slow Cooker Revolution
A worthy interpretation of this stalwart favorite. This recipe uses blade steaks, which are often on sale -- cooked in slow cooker, the chunks of steak were tender, juicy & flavorful.

Garlic-Lemon Pork
from Everyday Food
Fairly simple prep that serves up a family-friendly and company-worthy delicious supper. Definitely going in the official rotation!

Oven-Roasted Brussels Sprouts w/ Garlic, Red Peppers & Parmesan
from Cook's Illustrated
I'm embarrassed to admit, it was just two weeks ago that I tasted my first brussels sprout, they just weren't a part of my family's culinary repertoire, but oh my, I'm a big sprout fan now! The boys initial visual review was a resounding "ick", but a dash of red pepper flakes and a blizzard of parm convinced them to try one . . . thumbs down turned to thumbs up.

Housewife's Oven-Roasted Red Potatoes
A Weeksworld favorite - Medium red potatoes, washed & cut into 3/4"-1" slices, toss potato slices with a few Tbs olive oil, some kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder and chopped rosemary (fresh or dried). Spread slices in a single layer on a parchment or silicone mat lined baking sheet and bake in a pre-heated 425 oven for 15-25 minutes. Keep an eye on the potatoes and flip when pan side of slices are nicely browned.

Housewife's Caesar Chicken
Housewife's Own
Another culinary confession . . . my Caesar Chicken is just split chicken breast with Ken's Caesar Dressing poured on top, roast at 350 til the chicken reaches an internal temp of 165. This one never fails to come out juice and flavorful.

Trader Joe's Mushroom Risotto - I add a 1/2 cup grated Parmesan.

Housewife's Sauteed Broccolini - warm 1-2 TBS olive oil in a large saute pan, add kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, toss broccolini in oil, add 1/4 C water and cover. Toss broccolini once or twice. Cook til bright green & al dente. Remove broccolini. Add 1 TBS butter & 1 TBS lemon juice to pan, then pour over broccolini.

Trader Ming's (Trader Joe's) Pad Thai -- I always keep a couple of boxes in the pantry. Toss in some diced chicken breast (this week's 5buck cluck) and you've got supper in a snap. If you've got 'em you can add some diced red peppers, sliced scallion, and for garnish, chopped cilantro and chopped peanuts.

I didn't manage to squeeze in the Honey Oatmeal or Olive, Rosemary & Parmesan Breads (hopefully this week), instead I whipped up a batch of America's Test Kitchen Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies for an impromptu play date. The recipe is like no other chocolate chip cookie recipe I've ever made, and they turned out great. I'll whip up another batch soon & share 'em with y'all.

This week's kitchen agenda is . . .

Now I'm off to the market! Gotta get the Moroccan Chicken Stew in the slow cooker before taking the boys to see Wreck It Ralph and Kiddie Yoga (yep, they've got another no-school day!).

Barefoot Books' World Atlas Book & App - Entertaining, Engaging and Educating

The Master of Mischief started kindergarten this fall!

But in our humble 'burb, kindergarten is a half day affair (with a 2-5 days/week, tuition-based kindergarten enrichment program, of course), so Tuesday & Thursday mornings are Mommy & Master time.

Sure, there are mornings jammed with errands or chores (it's surprising how much fun laundry & pot scrubbing can be with a 5-year-old assistant!) - but I try to spend some of each of morning doing something special, unique or fun.

One of our Mommy & Master morning favorites is the Barefoot Books World Atlas(written by Nick Crane, illustrated by David Dean) and the companion iPad app.

The book is full of colorful illustrations and fascinating facts. There are pages to unfold, flaps to flip and a world map to tack on the wall or stow away in the handy back pocket.

The companion iPad app takes this world exploration adventure to a whole new level!

And when Mama needs to break away to answer the phone or a few emails, the Master doesn't even looked up to protest my abandonment, 'cause author, Nick Crane, is keeping him company, narrating as the Master explores the globe.

Soon enough, the Master will be on a full-day school schedule, so thanks Barefoot Books for many wonderful Mom & Master mornings this 1/2 day kindergarten year.

* I have received no consideration for this post -- I just wanted to share our wonderful experience with this great book & app.

Weeksworld Weekly Eats #2

Last week Sandy derailed mundane, routine planning. There was prep to be done -- batteries & electronics to charge, yard furniture to stow away, generators to test run and non-electricity dependent provisions to be stocked. So I skipped the menu planning.

Overall, our area was blessed -- Sandy's impact wasn't as bad as it could have been -- though several streets in our 'hood lost power for three days. Our humble abode is the oldest on our street, so its power lines run to a different line that runs down one of our 'burb's main thoroughfares, so we rarely lose power.

We were happy to open our home to friends with out power, and the boys loved every minute of it - a multi-day play date! The dishwasher got a serious work out though - one day running four loads. But I count our blessing as I watch our neighbors in CT, NY and NJ dealing with Sandy's aftermath.

I made a donation to the Red Cross' Sandy Relief Fund this morning, tiddied up the house, caught up on the mountain of laundry & flurry of emails, so it's time to get back to the weekly routines that keep me sane, including our weekly menu plan.

The week before Sandy's arrival, this is how the menu plan played out...

Thai-Style Chicken Soup
from America's Test Kitchen's Slow Cooker Revolution
I added Thai noodles to make this a real meal in one bowl.
A nice soup, but I prefer the brighter flavors of ATK's stove-top Thai Chicken Soup.
Chili Mac
from America's Test Kitchen's Slow Cooker Revolution
Another near-hit, good, but not great. The flavors were a bit dull, and the macaroni was a tad past al dente. Think I'll stick with traditional, stove-top. The Baron & Master love chili mac, so I think I'll try Martha Stewart's Stove-Top Chili Mac next time.

Chipolte Shrimp with Cheddar Grits
from Everyday Food
I added chunks of chicken breast (frozen, grilled strips I buy in a jumbo bag at BJ's) to lure in the boys. Brilliant move Mom! A few bits of shrimp actually snuck in with those chicken chunks!
Simple & quick, and a hit with my menfolk, this one's going into the rotation!

Old-fashioned Tamale Pie
from America's Test Kitchen's Slow Cooker Revolution
Our local market runs a weekly "5-buck cluck" (rotisserie chicken), which saved $$ and prep time! Next time I'll add some frozen corn and green peppers.
The guys loved it! Two hits in two days! I was on a roll!

Sweet Potato and Sausage Soup
from Everyday Food
I doubled the recipe, and used both sweet and red potatoes.
I didn't think it was possible - a three-day culinary streak!
They liked the soup so much I didn't hear a  single complaint about the "green stuff" (swiss chard).

So what's on the menu this week?

Bonus Baking -- Honey Oatmeal Bread & Almost No-Knead Olive, Rosemary & Parmesan Bread.

Still Lost in the ADD Fog

The past couple of weeks, I wake each morning full of hope -- hope that today will be the day the ADD fog will finally burn off and the sun will shine through.

The ADD cycle has an unpredictable rhythm. It's like a mental seesaw, teetering back & forth between focus and distraction, but the rhythm is erratic, unpredictable, and exasperating.

Two days distracted, then a week of normal, non-ADD productivity. Four days spent running in circles, followed by three days of glorious hyper-focus & super productivity. A few weeks tuning out the rising noise, getting enough done each day, then weeks of fog I can't find my way out of or rise above.
